Hi my name is Karl and I’ve been keeping both Australian and Foreign finches now for over 25 years. In this time I have learnt many things and yet I'm still amazed that I continue to discover new things about my birds everyday. I have devoted my life to producing only the very best birds that I can to ensure healthier, stronger & productive aviaries. This benefits those that purchase stock from me as they are getting only the best birds to keep and breed.
At least two (2) pairs are kept of each species (usually three or more) to ensure unrelated pairs can be made available to our clients. Our stock is replenished on a regular basis to ensure healthy vigorous stock is producing the highest grade offspring available. Species kept are as listed below:
- Painted Firetails
- Red-faced Parrot Finch (Pied)
- Orange-breasted Waxbills
- African Fire Finch (Ruddy)
- Little Green Singing Finch
- Cuban Finch
- St. Helena Waxbill
- King Quail (Dilute Cinnamon, Silver, Cinnamon & Normal's
We currently run 3 x (4.0m X 2.4m X 2.0m) plus 2 x (4.0m X 1.2m X 2.0) aviaries which are soon to be expanded and compacted. The final outcome will be a series of approx 17 x (4.0m X 1.2m X 2.0m) aviaries which will allow more control and unity of species kept. Two of these will be holding cages only with hens in one & cocks in the other. All our aviaries are planted with green panic grass to give our birds a way to de-stress naturally plus obtain naturally occurring green foods and live foods alike. We also have a supplementary nutrition regime which includes greens, soaked seed, maggots, mini mealworms & half ripe seed heads of various seed species.
I try NOT to use (yes you read this right) medications when ever possible as it only stresses the birds and weakens their natural de fence against illness. I worm no more than twice a year and treat for coccidiosis once a year or after continuous rain periods.
I have recently started to specialize in breeding a few birds with 'special' characteristics. These are the 'Red-fronted' Painted Firetail, 'Pied' Red-faced Parrot Finch ( Normal & Sea Green) and a 'Dilute Cinnamon' King Quail. Some of these are only in their initial stages and will be sometime before well developed. There maybe quite sometime due to the fact I can be a perfectionist in relation to most things I undertake.
Orchids have been another passion of mine for about 20 years or so now with species becoming my area of focus. Although I do keep hybrids of many genus' they are most likely a personal attraction I have for that particular plant or it's flowers.
My greatest focus is on the species:
- The species Cattleya walkeriana for its flower texture, large flowers in comparison to it's foliage and it's exquisite perfume.
- The genus Bulbophyllum also is of interest as it possess some of the more unusual orchid species around today in a variety of colour's, shapes and sizes.
- I also have a large collection of Dendrobium speciosum in various varieties although var. pedunculatum is my favourite.
This section has become a major event in my present day lifestyle as I discovered that this field is forever changing and throwing up continuous challengers daily.
